Caravan sites

On the day we came out of lockdown in 2020, we suddenly decided to buy a Motorhome. In the past we’d had a 2 man tent, trailer tent, frame tent and caravan but had never even considered a Motorhome.

With a husband in his seventies with a heart condition and back problems I realised that a motorhome would mean we could drive somewhere, take the dogs for a walk and then have lunch followed by a rest (or nap). We could take things at our own pace and travel further, and best of all for me, we would never be too far from a toilet (particularly important as things started to open up, but a lot of toilets remained closed).

3 days later, after a lot of research and travelling to view, we paid the deposit on a small 2 berth Ace Capri that was 17 years old. Four weeks later, we collected her (now called Demelza) and the travels started.

Initially we stuck to Caravan and Motorhome club sites, then added Camping and Caravan club sites (they do an age concession for over 60’s) and as we gained confidence, branched out into certified locations, independent sites and the odd off grid location.

Most of our trips away are within Devon or Cornwall for the odd night – usually mid week, booked quite late when the forecast is looking good, but we do occasionally venture further afield for longer trips.

The reviews on the following pages are focused on how suitable the site is for dogs and what places are nearby that they will enjoy.

For us, a decent dog walk on, or from the site is essential. I am an early riser, my husband is not, so I need somewhere I can take them for a good walk for at least 1/2 hour while he has a lie in.
