Dog fields

Enclosed dog fields that you can rent by the hour or half hour are a relatively new phenomenon but they can be great for exercising dogs safely and for meeting up with friends and their dogs. They all have limits on the number of cars and dogs that are allowed on one booking but many are open to bigger meet ups if arranged directly with them.

DEVON AND CORNWALL

Bude – Mapowders traning field, EX23 9NR

https://www.mapowders.co.uk/services

Parking for several cars, double gates and enrichment equipment for the dogs. Beautiful views.

Callington – Charwell Dog Adventures, PL17 7HW

https://charwelldogadventures.simplybook.it/v2/

4 bookable fields:

The Agility Paddock – An area to have fun in providing Hoopers, tunnels, flyball and obstacles

The Enrichment Paddock – A large area for dogs to let off some steam, with enriching areas for them to dig, balance, sniff and tunnel.

The Splash Field – A paddock to run and play in with the added bonus of shallow ponds and sprinklers to chase.

The ball field – this is the latest field which we haven’t tried yet which has a ball throwing machine and dug in trampolines.

We have been to several Cornwall and Devon Golden Retriever meet ups here (up to 131 Goldies) and when we do, we have access to all the fields. We have also booked it with friends, booking 2 of the fields for 1/2 hour each then gone to the Manor House Inn at Rilla Mill for lunch.

Ours spend most of their time in the Splash field and have an absolutely brilliant time. Plenty of parking, Large dog poo bins, toilet, Tea and Coffee making facilities. All fields double gated with a 6 foot high fence

Camelford – Moorgate dog training field

Recommended by Dave: Some agility equipment, an enclosed field – easy to find if you go from Crowdy cross the Roughtor road and turn right before the ford. Adequate, but wonderful views – water is via hosepipe but no facilities – we use it a lot at High tide when we can not go on beach . Owner is hoping to put a shelter in next.

Launceston, Cornwall – Field of Dreams, PL15 8NL

https://www.facebook.com/FieldOfDreamsLaunceston/

2.5 acre enclosed dog field with agility equipment, ball pool etc for up to 8 dogs in up to 2 households. Parking for 2 cars on hardstanding. Shelter and seats for adults to use and water for drinking / cleaning dogs is provided. Current price (September 2022) is £10.00 per hour. Slots can be booked and amended online via Facebook. This is an incredibly popular dog field and gets booked up quickly. Is sometimes closed to new customers so worth getting a booking in when they are accepting new customers as you will then be able to book again in the future. Although this is a 45 minute drive from us, it is good enough for us to make the effort.

A 2 acre dog walking field on the edge of Launceston with some agility equipment and a shelter.

Devon

Brixham, Devon – Barkers Unleashed, TQ5 0AJ

http://www.barkersunleashed.com/

A sloping field of 1.5 acres with a shelter, picnic table with sea views, activity equipment and very good parking. The road leading to it is single track so we were very grateful to be collected from our caravan site by a friend rather than trying to get the Motorhome up there. Even though the weather was horrendous, we still had a great time. Bookable via their website.

Copplestone – Pooches Paddock  EX17 5NX

Home

A lovely large field with agility equipment and beautiful views. Easy to find off the Copplestone to New Buildings road. Secure parking for several cars and rental includes up to 4 dogs.

We have been back several times and the dogs always enjoy it

A free fully secure enclosed dog field provided by the council. Not massive but it has a hedge running through it to make it more interesting. Water bowls and a bin provided plus a bench to sit on.

Dolton – Allerford Dog Field, EX19 8PP

https://www.facebook.com/allerford

A reasonable size enclosed dog field with a shelter with water for the dogs and a bench further up the field. Down a narrow lane but the directions given by the owners were very good. We used this to give our two some off the lead exercise while Jenna was in season and otherwise had to be walked on the lead. Bookable on Facebook.

Haytor Mutt Mayhem, Ilsington, TQ13 9RB

https://www.haytormuttmayhem.com/

Good sized secure field with some agility equipment and a covered shelter with picnic table and chairs which contains toys, treats and poo bags. There didn’t seem to be a poo bin which was a pity. Quite close to the Newton Abbott junction on the A38. Current price (April 2022) is £7 for 1/2 hours for up to 3 dogs and there is parking in the enclosed area for up to 2 cars. There is more parking outside so this would be a good place for a meet up.

Holsworthy, Woodlands Farm (Wiggly Woods), EX22 7JB

https://www.woodlandsfarmdogfields.co.uk/

30 acre fields and woods with agility equipment, picnic tables, water stations and a toilet on site.

Great area to wander around and you could happily spend an afternoon here with a picnic. Lots of things to interest your dogs.

Only down side was that after our visit at the beginning of July, our dogs picked up a lot of ticks. These were easy to remove because they weren’t embedded but it’s worth making sure they have good tick protection before you go and that you check them over afterwards.

Ivybridge, Devon – Hounds unleashed, PL21 9JL

Two enclosed fields separated by a fence with some green netting. Afghan is the slighter larger field but neither are particularly big. The separation of the two fields means that if there are reactive dogs in either field they are likely to run alongside the fence barking.

Very close to Endsleigh Garden Centre, South Moor vets and a farm shop and cafe which makes it convenient if you are visiting there, but not a field I can see us using much again, if at all.

We used the paddock for a run with ours and Kim’s dogs. The field slopes and has lots of different enrichment items – tunnel, sand pit, tyres etc.

Plymouth – Walkies at Wixenford, PL9 8AA

https://dogwalkingfieldplymouth.co.uk/booking/

Large enclosed dog field with a shelter and room for parking either within the field or on the road outside. We had a meet up for Jenna and her sisters, Mum and Gran – a deliberately arranged girly meet up to allow for the fact that it was possible that at least one of the girls would be in season (and in fact Nellie was). Bookable via their website.

https://www.swlakestrust.org.uk/roadford-lake-cafe-and-venue

There is a small enclosed dog field where dogs can run off the lead. The rest of the area is more suitable for lead walks because of the reservoir (risk of blue-green algae) and nesting birds.

A 3.5 acre field with various activities. Some of the grass is mowed, some left short to provide variety.

Welcome

A lovely dog field with different areas and activities. It is very steep but the dogs had a great time. There is parking for 2 cars with an arrangement so that there can be 2 cars waiting while the previous 2 cars are finishing and leaving.

OTHER COUNTIES

Berkshire

Bracknell – Fido’s fun, RG42 5RY

https://www.fidosfun.co.uk/

There are 3 fields here and we used field 3 which is a large but fairly basic field with only a single bench and no shelter or enrichment. We paid more because with 6 dogs, we were charged the price for a meet up rather than a private booking, but even without that, the prices seemed expensive compared to what we are used to paying in Devon and Cornwall.
