Self Catering

Before we got our Motorhome we used to stay in self catering places with the dogs. We have found Airbnb good as you can filter to places that allow dogs. Listed below are ones we have found particularly good both for their dog friendliness and their location.

Cornwall

Sennen Cove

Sennen Cove is probably our favourite place for holidays – it has a pub, cafe, fish and chip shop, general shop and craft shop and that’s about it so it’s not popular with people who want lots of entertainment. In summer there is an additional car park up on the cliff top but out of season (May is good) there are just 2 car parks and once they are full, that’s it, so it doesn’t tend to be too crowded. The beach is gorgeous (sandy) and is dog friendly in the summer before 10am and after 6pm and all day in the winter. There are fabulous walks along the coast path.

A mixture of sizes – we were in Basking shark which is quite small but was fine for us and our black Labrador. It is at the front of the cottages and has a fantastic view over the cove. It is about a mile from the village with a direct path to the beach across the sand dunes and with the coast path running in front of the cottage. Parking is at the top and you can arrange for your baggage to be brought down for you – it’s a very steep path!

Cornish Horizons

A block of apartments, mostly holiday lets. There is no vehicular access to the apartments so everything has to be carried up the 80 steps. Fantastic views. The apartment had a King Size bedroom with a bath overlooking the sea, large dining / living room and a separate shower and toilet.

The Cubby Hole, TR19 7DF

The Cornish Way

We have stayed here twice – Christmas 2019 and September 2020. The rental is organised by a small company who are fantastic for customer service. It is on the seafront about 300 yds from the beach and also from the coast path. On the ground floor, it has two double bedrooms and a lovely large room with a well equipped kitchen, dining table and 2 comfy sofas in front of a wood burning stove. There is parking in front of the apartment.

Dorset

Chesil Beach Lodge, Bridport, DT6 4RJ

Front Page

Self catering apartments (with some dog friendly) overlooking the Jurassic coast. We stayed in Jurassic apartment which has a separate king size bedroom and allows up to 2 dogs. There is an enclosed dog walking area outside the block and you can walk over the cliffs to Hive beach or along the coast path.

Hampshire

Lovely lodge set in the owner’s grounds but quite separate and private. Equipped with everything you need and with access onto the common from behind the lodge. A small enclosed garden and dogs are allowed to run free in the rest of the grounds as long as they don’t chase deer.

Newlands Farm, Odiham, RG29 1JD

We spent 3 nights here, taking over the 3 bedroomed barn which is beautifully light, airy and well equipped. All 3 bedrooms are en-suite as they can be booked individually and you then have use of the shared kitchen and living room.

Mary was extremely welcoming and provided breakfast for us to cook in the barn. The barn is surrounded by fields and we were lucky that when we stayed, there were no sheep in the field outside the barn and we were able to let the dogs off.

Absolutely fabulous cottage – incredibly well equipped with top of the range gadgets and a hot tub. Sleeps 7 in 3 double bedrooms and one singe bedroom and has a separate dog bedroom. Fully enclosed garden and private path to the beach. Officially allows 3 dogs but because the owner has, and breeds, Golden Retrievers we managed to negotiate having 8 Goldies as long as they stayed downstairs (there is a stairgate) and in the dog bedroom if we went out.

Honestly couldn’t ask for a better place. Washing machine (with plenty of laundry capsules provided), tumble dryer, dishwasher, range cooker, microwave, coffee machine – everything you could ask for.

Fairly basic house lacking the finer touches but with 2 double bedrooms (one with bunk beds as well as a double bed) and a single room which has a curtain instead of a door. Two bathrooms, 2 living rooms, a small kitchen and an outside decking area leading to a small garden (which was very overgrown). However, he did agree to us having 5 golden retrievers there as long as we picked up and removed the fur before leaving. Close to a bus stop and station (Milton).

Camarthenshire

We stayed here for 4 nights in September 2023 in the Old Bike shed. We found the mezzanine bed a step too far for us at our age so although we would definitely come again, we would stay in one of the other cottages.

The cottages are all completely dog friendly – with enclosed patios / gardens and access to Scentral Bark – a completely enclosed dog field with a range of activities including a pond and ball pit.

Access to Brechna forest is 300 yards from the top of the lane that goes down to the cottages and although to go anywhere else you have to travel for 30 – 40 minutes, there is a lot within that sort of travelling distance – beaches, Camarthen, steam railway, dolphon spotting boat trips.

We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and although it was very hot, there was a good breeze in the garden.

We visited again in February 2024 and were again generally lucky with the weather (just one rainy day). This time we stayed in Bay tree Barn which sleeps 4. It was fine for the two of us but I feel would be a bit cramped if you were two couples, rather than a family.

Airbnb

We stayed at Rocket House overlooking Poppit sands for our 40th Wedding Anniversary in October 2020. Beautiful cottage with a king size bed and an enclosed two level garden so dogs can run freely. Very well equipped kitchen.

Airbnb

Lovely second floor flat with great decor – paintings and furnishings. We stayed here twice while our son was doing his Master’s at Swansea, including over Christmas when they provided a Christmas tree and decorations. There is a lovely park immediately behind the flat and both Langland and Rotherslade beaches are within walking distance as is Swansea bay and Mumbles village. The gentleman who manages the flat has 3 dogs of his own and can suggest places to take them. He left a welcome pack including wine, welsh cakes and dog treats.

Airbnb

Lovely dog friendly 1 bedroom lodge in the country. Very well equipped kitchen and the owners left us a substantial welcome pack including bread, eggs, milk, biscuits etc. Enclosed courtyard at the back overlooking the Alpacas. We were staying for a friend’s 60th birthday party and they had a nervous cat so we couldn’t take Morwenna. The owners were happy for her to stay in the lodge while we attended the party and she settled well and was quiet all evening.

The canal runs from the end of the drive and was ideal for walks

Yorkshire

Canal Cottage, Kildwick, near Skipton

Really well equipped cottage right on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Beautifully set out with a welcome basket for humans and dogs. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful and there is a wealth of information available on the surrounding area.

Ingleby Manor, TS9 6RB

A historic manor house set in gorgeous grounds. The gun room which sleeps 2 in a king size bed allows dogs with prior agreement.

Easy access from here to the North York Moors and the coast.

Leeds – Benedict narrow boat, Leeds dock

Airbnb

For a unique experience, how about a narrow boat in the centre of Leeds? Benedict is a beautifully appointed boat which is dog friendly moored in Leeds dock and with a grass area and small enclosed dog park (locked at night) nearby.
