Cornwall – beaches

Cornish beaches

Cornish beaches get very busy during the summer and parking is usually limited to some extent. If you want to spend time on the beach, arriving fairly early or going in the early evening is probably your best bet.

Most beaches managed by Cornwall County Council have dog restrictions during the summer but these restrictions mainly apply from 10am to 6pm meaning that an early or late walk is possible.

Black Rock, Widemouth Bay, Bude, EX23 0AG

Sandy beach with rocks to the south side which are hidden at high tide. The area in front of the car park and cafe is clear of rocks. Dog friendly all year round with a dog friendly cafe. Doesn’t tend to be as busy as the Widemouth bay beach to the north or Summerleaze beach.

DuckpoolBude, EX23 9HW

Stony with large rocks visible at low tide, Duckpool has a seasonal dog ban. There are plenty of rock pools to explore and the coast path to walk on. Down narrow lanes, it’s main attraction for us is the relative closeness to the Rectory Tearooms at Morwenstow which does gorgeous gluten free food including cream teas. Dogs are definitely allowed in the garden which is a beautiful setting. You can also walk along the coast path from here.

Gwithians towans beach, TR27 5BX

A stunningly beautiful beach with plenty of parking and a cafe. Jenna found a lovely pool to swim in.

Porthmeor beach, TR26 2BN

This is a massive sandy beach situated in front of Tate St Ives. Gorgeous for dogs to run on but be aware, there is a seasonal dog ban from the 15th May to 30th September between 10am and 6pm.

Sennen Cove, Penzance, TR19 7DG

One of my favourite places and beaches. We have stayed here numerous times, either in a holiday let or the Old Success Inn which is dog friendly. Being able to walk 300 yards to a beautiful sandy beach is fantastic. Dogs allowed on the beach all year round but restricted to before 10am and after 6pm in the summer.

Summerleaze beach, Bude, EX23 8HJ

Really deep beach – there is still beach exposed even at the peak of the highest tide of the year. During the summer dogs must be on a lead between 10am and 6pm. Large car park so a reasonable bet even in the summer.

Widemouth BayBude, EX23 0AH

The beach is dog friendly in winter and I was surprised that on a dry sunny Sunday afternoon in November that it was pretty much only dog walkers on the beach – I suspect that families without dogs had gone to nearby Summerleaze beach. We were parked in the car park at the northern end of the beach where there are toilets and a dog friendly cafe. Plenty of room for the dogs to run and a nice sandy beach.
